Dune-Inspired Sunrise Photoshoot at Coral Pink Sand Dunes, Utah

A Sunrise Shoot with Dune Energy
There’s something magical about starting the day in the desert — especially when it’s a place that holds personal roots. I was born in Kanab, Utah, and even though I’m now based in Logan, I travel often for photography. This particular morning, we found ourselves at Coral Pink Sand Dunes State Park, just outside Kanab, for a sunrise shoot that felt like stepping into a dream.

As part of the Salt Lake City Inspired and Eternal West Editorial photography retreat, our group of photographers and models gathered before the sun rose over the dunes. The shoot was heavily inspired by the film Dune, with flowing fabrics, earthy tones, and styling that felt straight out of a sci-fi editorial. The light was soft and golden, casting long shadows across the sand and creating that painterly glow photographers chase.

Sledding in Style (Literally)
The models were incredible — styled in layered neutrals and wind-catching fabrics, each look captured a different mood. Just when things couldn’t get more fun, someone found a sand sled tucked behind one of the dunes. That’s when things took a turn in the best way: models (and photographers!) started sledding down the hills between shots, dresses flying, laughter echoing. The whole vibe became playful, spontaneous, and perfectly chaotic.
Despite the early call time and chilly morning air, this shoot ended up being one of my favorites from the retreat. The Coral Pink Sand Dunes never disappoint, and as someone who grew up nearby, it was amazing to return with fresh eyes and a camera full of ideas.
