Styled Photoshoot at the Colored Caves near Kanab, Utah

Shooting Where It All Started
As someone who was born in Kanab, Utah, it’s always extra special when I get to photograph in the unique landscapes that shaped my childhood. Now based in Logan, I travel all over the West for photography — but coming back to the Colored Caves outside Kanab felt full circle in the best way.

This stop on the Salt Lake City Inspired and Eternal West Editorial photography retreat was full of rich textures, wild colors, and creative energy. These caves — a hidden gem just outside town — are naturally painted in shades of rust, orange, gray-blue, and sandstone. The light bounces around the curves in the most cinematic way.
Concepts That Came to Life
We styled multiple concepts here:
Navy and gold editorial looks
A fallen angel wandering the desert
A lost traveler framed by glowing rock
A goddess vibe wrapped in silk and shadow

Each model brought something different, and the location gave us the creative freedom to really lean into storytelling. But it wasn’t all perfect — at one point, I knelt down to get a low angle and absolutely slammed my knee on a hidden rock. The bruise stuck around for days, but so did the shots.
Oh, and then there was Marin — who saw the word “ICONIC” carved into the cave wall and, true to her chaotic brand, licked it. (Yes, we have photographic evidence.)
