💭 A Pep Talk to My Younger Photographer Self

If I could go back and give baby photographer Rachael a little pep talk, I think she’d need to hear this:

Three smiling people pose outdoors in front of a brick wall. One person shows a peace sign, another holds a can. Casual and friendly mood.

📸 You don’t need to shoot everything.

💸 Know your worth.

📅 Boundaries matter.

Simple? Maybe. But it took me years — and a whole lot of experience — to really understand what those three things meant.

📸 You Don’t Need to Shoot Everything

When you first start out, it feels like saying yes is the only way forward. Yes to every inquiry, every genre, every favor, every “just for fun” session. And honestly? There’s beauty in that. It’s how you learn, experiment, and figure out what lights you up.

But at some point, you start realizing that not every opportunity aligns with your creative vision — and that’s okay. The real magic happens when you narrow your focus and pour your energy into the work that excites you most.

Saying no doesn’t close doors. It just opens the right ones.

💸 Know Your Worth

Pregnant woman in a green lace dress touches her belly in a sunny, grassy field. She exudes a serene and joyful mood.

Oh, this one.

There were so many times early on when I undercharged, overworked, or apologized for my prices — all because I thought “experience” meant proving myself endlessly. But here’s the truth: your time, talent, and perspective have value from day one.

The moment you start honoring your worth, your work changes — not just creatively, but emotionally. Clients notice. You notice. And suddenly, photography feels sustainable again.

You can’t pour your heart into something that constantly drains you.

📅 Boundaries Matter

This one might be the hardest lesson of all. It’s so easy to blur the lines between work and life when you love what you do. But I’ve learned that boundaries don’t limit creativity — they protect it.

Scheduling days off. Turning down last-minute shoots that clash with family plans. Setting clear communication hours. All of it matters more than you think.

Boundaries allow you to keep showing up — fully, joyfully, and without burnout.

🌿 The Bigger Picture

If I could tell younger Rachael anything, it would be this: you’re doing great. You don’t have to have it all figured out. Every mistake, every awkward shoot, every sleepless editing night — it’s all part of the story that shapes you into the artist you’re meant to become.

Keep chasing light, but also protect your own. ✨
