✨ What to Consider When Choosing a Photoshoot Location

Choosing the perfect photoshoot location is so much more than just finding a pretty backdrop. The right spot sets the mood, shapes the lighting, and helps everyone feel comfortable and relaxed — which always leads to more natural, genuine photos. Here are a few things I always walk my clients through when picking the perfect place. 🌿📸

🌤️ 1. Lighting Matters More Than Anything

Every location looks different depending on the light — and the time of day totally transforms it.

  • Golden hour = warm, soft, glowy magic ✨

  • Midday = harsher light, best with shade or cliffs

  • Sunrise = peaceful, quiet, dreamy pastels

  • Dense trees = soft, moody, even light

A spot that seems amazing in person might not photograph well at noon, so timing plays a huge role.

🌦️ 2. Think About Weather + Seasons

Utah weather keeps us on our toes. 😉

  • Some trails close in winter ❄️

  • Desert spots get hot in summer ☀️

  • High elevations are windy in spring 💨

  • Fall color disappears quickly 🍂

And of course — always good to have a Plan B just in case the forecast decides to get interesting!

👨‍👩‍👧‍👦 3. Consider Who’s in the Photos

Your group’s needs matter when choosing a location.

  • Big groups need breathing room

  • Young kids = closer parking + shorter walks

  • Grandparents or anyone with mobility concerns = flat, accessible paths

  • Pets = places where they’re allowed 🐾

Comfort = better moods = better photos. Always.

✨ 4. The Vibe You Want

This is where your personality shines.

  • Desert sandstone? Bold + adventurous

  • Mountains? Clean, fresh, timeless

  • Urban? Modern and sleek

  • Studio? Minimal and distraction-free

  • Meadows? Soft, romantic, airy

The right setting helps your photos feel like you.

⏰ 5. Time of Day = Everything

Even the best location can feel totally different at different times of day.

  • Sunrise = calm + dreaminess

  • Golden hour = warm + cinematic

  • Blue hour = soft + moody

  • Midday = bright + contrasty

This is why I help guide clients toward the most flattering light for their chosen spot.

🚶 6. Crowds + Privacy

Some locations are gorgeous… but busy. Really busy.

If you want moments that feel natural and unposed, a quieter location usually helps everyone relax. Hidden gems are often the favorites. ✨

📄 7. Permits + Restrictions

Some places require a photography permit — especially parks or protected areas.

It’s nothing stressful, just something to be aware of! I always let clients know what’s needed and handle the process when I can.

💛 8. Choose a Place That Means Something

Pretty is great, but meaningful is even better.

A canyon you grew up exploring, your grandparents’ backyard, a family cabin, the spot where you had your first date — these places add emotion that can’t be replicated.

Final Thoughts

Choosing a photoshoot location is part art, part planning, and part intuition — but it makes such a difference. When the spot, light, and comfort level all work together, the photos feel effortless and real.

And if you’re ever unsure, I’m always happy to help you pick the perfect place based on season, style, and your family’s personality. 🤍
