🌊 A Creative Siren Shoot with Salt Lake City Inspired

Every year, the creative community behind Salt Lake City Inspired brings photographers, models, and artists together for themed shoots that push creativity in exciting new directions. These meetups are always a highlight of the season because they give everyone the chance to collaborate, experiment, and build something visually unique.

For this particular shoot, the theme was sirens and mermaids, and the plan was to photograph along the shoreline of the Great Salt Lake. The location was perfect for the concept. The open water, dramatic horizon, and natural textures of the lake create an atmosphere that feels both eerie and beautiful—exactly the kind of setting you would imagine for mythical sea creatures emerging from the water.

Creatives arrived with costumes, makeup ideas, and a shared vision of creating hauntingly beautiful imagery inspired by folklore and fantasy.

⛈ When the Weather Had Other Plans

As often happens when photographing outdoors in Utah, the weather decided to take the lead.

Shortly after the shoot began, a major lightning storm started rolling across the lake. Because we were photographing right along the shoreline, there wasn’t much protection from the incoming rain or lightning. The open landscape that made the location so beautiful also meant there was very little cover when the storm moved in.

Safety had to come first.

What was originally planned as a longer collaborative session quickly turned into a thirty-minute sprint of creativity before everyone had to pack up and head for shelter.

🧜‍♀️ Thirty Minutes of Creative Chaos

Despite the sudden storm, the energy during those thirty minutes was incredible. Photographers and models worked quickly, leaning into the dramatic atmosphere that the incoming storm created.

Dark clouds rolled over the horizon while the wind picked up across the lake, creating the perfect backdrop for a siren-inspired concept. Instead of fighting the weather, everyone embraced it. The rain, the wind, and the dramatic lighting added an unexpected moodiness that made the images feel even more haunting.

What started as a playful mermaid concept quickly transformed into something darker and more cinematic—exactly the kind of eerie siren imagery you might imagine in mythology.

❄ Soaked, Freezing, and Still Smiling

By the time the shoot wrapped up, everyone was absolutely soaked. The rain came down fast, the wind off the lake made the temperature drop quickly, and most of us left the shoreline freezing and dripping wet.

But no one seemed to mind.

There was still laughter, excitement, and that shared feeling creatives get when something chaotic somehow turns into something special. Even though the shoot was cut short, everyone managed to capture incredible content in a very short window of time.

Sometimes those unpredictable moments create the most memorable experiences.

📸 Ending the SLCI Season on a High Note

Even though the siren shoot lasted only about half an hour, it ended up being a perfect way to round out the season of creative meetups with Salt Lake City Inspired.

These gatherings are never just about the photos. They’re about the creative community—photographers, models, stylists, and artists coming together to share ideas and support each other’s work.

The storm may have shortened the shoot, but it also gave us something unique: dramatic skies, moody lighting, and a memorable experience that no one will forget anytime soon.

And honestly, some of the best creative sessions are the ones where things don’t go exactly as planned.

📍 Creative Photography in Utah

Utah offers some incredible locations for creative photography—from mountain landscapes to desert terrain and unique spots like the Great Salt Lake. Sessions like this siren shoot are a reminder that creativity thrives when artists collaborate and embrace whatever conditions the environment throws their way.

Even if that means running from a lightning storm after thirty minutes.

And sometimes, those moments lead to the most unforgettable images.
